Free EV charger in Canada? Price the conditions, not just the hardware.
Current provider programs can put a Level 2 charger in an eligible Canadian home with no upfront hardware purchase price. That does not erase the deposit, shipping, electrical work, Wi-Fi, data, usage, ownership, reward or exit terms.
This is an independent terms comparison—not a provider ranking, government incentive page or promise of eligibility. Current official terms and checkout details always control.
Yes, offers exist. No, “free” is not one standard deal.
Grizzl-E Club is a supplied-hardware membership path: an approved member can receive a charger with no hardware purchase price, while United Chargers retains ownership during a supplied-charger membership. Deposit, shipping, installation, Wi-Fi, active primary use, charging data and return conditions apply under current terms.[1]
SWTCH Home Charging Program is an ownership path: its current terms say one charger per residential property can be acquired with no upfront hardware cost and ownership transfers to the customer on delivery. A $300 CAD deposit, shipping, installation, SWTCH-network connectivity, incentive assignment, reward and cancellation conditions still apply.[2]
Provincial and utility incentives are different again. Natural Resources Canada says rebates covering up to 50% of installation cost are available in some provinces, and warns that some require pre-approval before work begins.[4]

| Decision factor | Grizzl-E Club | SWTCH Home Charging Program | Provincial or utility rebate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hardware | One eligible supplied charger for an approved Club member, with no hardware purchase price. | One participating charger per residential property at no upfront hardware cost. | You usually purchase eligible hardware; the incentive may reimburse part of eligible cost. |
| Refundable deposit | Amount depends on enrolment type and charger. Current terms describe refund after the first online charging session for eligible chargers. | $300 CAD deposit; current terms say full refund after 1,500 kWh, with current app and firmware requirements. | Usually not a provider deposit, but timing and reimbursement rules vary. |
| Shipping and delivery | Member pays outbound shipping, handling and delivery; applicable return shipping can also be the member’s responsibility. | Customer pays checkout shipping. The live store displayed a $30 shipping fee when checked. | Shipping eligibility varies by program. |
| Electrical installation | Member pays installation and required electrical work. Qualified professional installation is required except specified existing-receptacle cases. | Customer pays and arranges installation by a licensed electrician under the terms. | Some programs cover a percentage of eligible installation cost; pre-approval may be required. |
| Ownership | A supplied charger remains the property of United Chargers during membership and is subject to return and program-end terms. | Current terms say title and ownership transfer to the customer on successful delivery. | Normally customer-owned equipment, subject to each incentive’s rules. |
| Wi-Fi and connected data | Continuous Wi-Fi is required; after ten additional sessions without Wi-Fi, the terms say charging is disabled until reconnection. Charging data supports rewards and credits. | Wi-Fi, SWTCH app/firmware and active SWTCH-network connection support deposit refund, rewards and Clean Fuel Regulations activity. | Depends on charger and incentive; a smart/connected model may be required. |
| Active use | Primary charger use is required; current terms define active status as 4–6 charging sessions per month. | Free-program participants can breach the terms after 180 consecutive offline days, with deposit and earnings consequences. | Program-specific. Some incentives have operation or retention periods. |
| Reward payout | Separate current Club cash-reward tiers and payout rules apply; rates can change. | Terms state $0.03 CAD/kWh for the first 1,500 kWh, then $0.11 CAD/kWh after the threshold. The updated $0.11 rate applies to charging sessions beginning on or after September 1, 2026 at 12:00 a.m. Eastern Time. Payouts are made in $100 increments; rates are variable and are not guaranteed. | A rebate is not normally a per-kWh home-charging reward. |
| Cancellation and return | A supplied charger generally must be returned when membership ends, under current return, shipping and fee provisions. | Customer owns the charger, but current free-program cancellation terms can require return at customer expense and deduct a $75 restocking fee for partial deposit refund. | Check clawback, minimum-retention and proof-of-installation rules. |
SWTCH’s live store currently announces the 11¢ rate beginning September 1 and displays a $300 deposit and $30 shipping fee. The legal terms—not a promotional headline—control the first-1,500-kWh phase, effective time, eligibility and variable-rate conditions.[2][3]

Natural Resources Canada says home-installation cost depends on the charging unit, your home’s electrical capacity, permit requirements and labour. In most jurisdictions, Level 2 equipment must be installed by a licensed electrician.[4]
Build a ballpark estimateCash can remain unavailable until the provider’s measured condition is satisfied.
Outbound fees may be non-refundable; return shipping can matter at cancellation.
Labour, circuit distance, permits and a code-compliant connection remain household costs.
Panel limits can require load management, a service upgrade or a lower configured current.
Determine whether the charger is supplied property or becomes yours on delivery.
Both examined provider programs depend on connected charging information for program operation.
A charger meant only for backup use may not fit ongoing program obligations.
Price restocking, removal, return shipping and deposit consequences before installation.
Clean Fuel Regulations are not a government charger rebate.
The federal Clean Fuel Regulations establish a credit market. Charging-network operators can create credits for residential EV charging, and revenues from residential and public charging credits must be reinvested in charging infrastructure or consumer financial incentives.[5]
That framework does not make these provider offers government-operated. Grizzl-E Club and the SWTCH Home Charging Program set their own applications, equipment, deposits, connectivity, rewards and termination terms. Neither provider’s offer is a Government of Canada approval or entitlement.

Four definitions worth keeping.
Can you get a free EV charger in Canada?
Some provider programs offer eligible participants a charger with no upfront hardware purchase price. Deposits, shipping, electrician work, connectivity, data, usage, rewards and exit conditions can still apply. Government or utility rebates are separate.
Is this a Government of Canada charger rebate?
No. The provider programs compared here use a market created by the Clean Fuel Regulations, but the providers—not the Government of Canada—set applications, equipment, rewards and program terms.
What can still cost money?
Depending on the offer and your home: refundable deposit, shipping, electrician labour, permit, new circuit, load management, panel upgrade, trenching, removal, restocking and return shipping.
